It's all in a name

Since COVID, things have gotten a bit out of hand at our house.

To help pass the time, there has been a certain level of over-indulging. I know you can relate to this.

I've been indulging in a lot of coffee. And for the first time in my life, I've been drinking decaf. Not all the time, just enough to keep the shakes at bay.

Of course, I don't plan to roast any of this poison myself. Deep down I think that might border on betrayal, so I'm thinking: Things could get very out of hand, very, very quickly around here, once the roasting starts.

In preparation for the big day, I whip down to Shopper’s to get a notebook to record my roasting data, so I can try to keep track of what the heck I’m doing.

Date, time, bean type, and various other bits and pieces that don’t make much sense to me yet, like ‘development time’ and ‘rate of rise’.

I've been reading the manual for my roaster (which I downloaded in advance), sussing out youtube videos, and generally getting very psyched up about my new roasting life.

Let's hope the sun rises tomorrow, the courier comes, so we can get down to business.

Meanwhile, though I haven't roasted a bean yet, I've thought of a name for my little enterprise.

I realize I may be getting ahead of myself here, as in reality the capacity of my roaster is 250g a pop, so we’re not exactly talking a commercial concern at this stage.

But I’m a creative type, and I like a good name. So it's FB to the rescue. Over the past couple of weeks, over a dozen (and counting) different coffee ads have made their way into my feeds, and they all want me to buy from them. I think I may have inadvertently mentioned coffee - you know how it works.

That’s over a dozen coffee roasters I won’t be buying from, but it’s also over a dozen names to avoid for my own venture. They were all pretty lame anyway - you know the usual un-clever stuff. Although I did quite like Cabin Fever Coffee. Appropriate for these times.

I'm a kiwi (a NZ’er, not the hairy fruit, or the flightless bird - although we are all related) so I thought: I wonder what the Maori/te reo name for coffee is?

Turns out it’s kawhe. Ok, not bad, but doesn't quite cut it for me, and half the world will never pronounce it correctly. I wonder what te reo for wake up is?

Oho. Bam!

Welcome to Oho Coffee (first crack at a logo below).
